This week, repsychl shares a list of black women in the beauty and fashion world compiled as part of an interview with photographer Chantel King.
Being a black female in the photography world, King has talked about an awareness of the lack of representation of people like her in front of and behind the camera. Her portfolio is a reflection of those in society whom she wants to see.
1. Charlotte Mensah, Hair Artist
Charlotte Mensah is a British/Ghanaian hairstylist. She is the beauty industry’s authority on natural, textured, and mixed heritage Afro hair. She is the founder and creative director of Hair Lounge, on London’s Portobello Road. In November 2018 she became the first black woman to be inducted into the British Hairdressing Hall of Fame.
2. Ajok Madel, Model
Ajok is a model who has worked for the likes of Valentino, Gautier, and Balcenciaga. In 2021, she was nominated as Breakout Star at the Model of the Year awards.
3. Nadine Ijewere, Photographer
Nadine Ijewere is a London-born photographer working in fashion and portraiture. She is known for celebrating the diversity of her models, many of whom do not conform to stereotypical fashion industry standards.
4. Candice Brathwaite, News Personality
Candice Brathwaite is a Sunday Times best-selling author, journalist, and presenter. In the past, she used the Internet to show how young black families are “not only surviving, but thriving”. Now, she shares her latest book, ‘Sista Sister’ (shown below), which reveals lessons she wishes she had been taught growing up.

Funmi Fetto is Contributing Editor at British Vogue, Beauty Director at Observer Magazine, and author of ‘PALETTE: The Beauty Bible for Women of Colour’.
